Thunderbird (TB) - creating an alias for your personal domain

This is brief because the amount of customisation is very, very much up to you - normally I only change the first page! Hence I have made no attempt to recommend or detail the other pages...

Getting into the 'account settings' - NB per account unlike Options!

The first steps are:

  1. Open Thunderbird and wait until any startup activity has finished (typically Send and Receive Mail)
  2. Select the Tools option from the action list just below the Window title bar (bright blue at the top of the window)
  3. then choose Account Settings... as shown to the right. This option is usually the second from the bottom in the 'Tools' list.

In the panel on the left you will see a list of accounts - each (may only be one!) with a number of Headings beneath them.

The one that I have chosen here has a name starting 'Reply2'

Choose the Top (Heading) line for the appropriate account.

The only button you need is in the bottom right of the panel named 'Manage Identities...'.

Choose (to Edit) or Add an Outgoing mail Identity

If you (or I!) have already created an Identity here then you can choose that and click on the 'Edit' button. If not then click on 'Add'.

This is the only set of options that *I* normally change, that doesn't mean that you should not change the other details - see further screen shots below.

These options should be set as follows, only numbered for our mutual ease of reference:

  1. Your name - Just in case there is doubt - the is what *recipients* of e-mails sent using this Identity will see as the 'From:' - e.g. Mr. B Roe.
  2. E-mail address - This is NORMALLY SET to be your REPLY-TO: alias for e-mails sent using this Identity. HOWEVER - when you are switching from an old alias for a group of people to a new one it can be set to the OLD alias just in case your contacts (for this alias) have spam checking software which depends on a "White List" of senders
  3. Reply-to Address - ONLY USE THIS IF you are using the above setting (E-mail address) in the manner described above - i.e. use your NEW alias here whereas the OLD alias is being used above.

    Otherwise leave this blank.

  4. Organisation - This a simple, free text field which will be shown as a line item (actually in what are called the 'headers' of the e-mail) if the user has selected that piece of information to view.
  5. Signature text - use this to set some simple, textual information for auto-inclusion in all outgoing e-mails sent using this Identity.

If you *do* want a more substantial signature then you probably need a small amount of technical support

  6. Outgoing Server (SMTP) - This is almost always to be left blank as that will use the same sending server as the account which you are creating this Identity within.

This is a set of options that I personally leave at their default settings. Obviously if you *have got a use* for them then change settings as you see fit.

Needless to say - there is no point in even showing the Security tab as making changes on that 'Tab' needs a substantial level of an obscure, specific technical knowledge.

I hope that has been useful. Any Comments, suggestions or corrections to: Contact us please. This would be especially useful if the software environment you have is different to mine and the headings, text or prompts are different.
